AZEK Technical and Installation Information
Rubber or vinyl products such as welcome mats and planters are NOT recommended on AZEK deck boards. The rubber/vinyl products can produce a reaction that causes discolouration of the decking under the product. This principle extends beyond AZEK decking products and with other synthetic materials as well.
Do not cantilever more than ½” for the best results.
AZEK decking should not be routed unless they are the start/stop boards.
Color and Grain Patterns
The colour variations and differing grain patterns that you see on the boards are purely aesthetic. These differences will not affect the performance of the material.
If there is an area with unobstructed airflow such as roofs, there needs to be a minimum of 1 1⁄2” sleeper system.
AZEK Deck is NOT made for use as primary load-bearing members such as columns, support posts, beams, joist stringers, guard railing. AZEK must be supported by a substructure that is compliant to the building codes of your municipality. AZEK decking material can be used to re-plank and old deck on code-compliant substructures but it CANNOT be installed on top of an existing deck. If your project involves the replanking of a deck then be sure to remove the old boards first before installing AZEK.
Expansion and Contraction
Extreme temperature changes in the GTA will cause AZEK to expand and contract. The changes may result in small gaps which may be noticeable at the end of boards. To minimize the expansion and contraction, the deck should be fastened according to the Installation Guidelines some of which are listed below.
- It is best to fasten the deck boards as soon after the cutting as possible.
- Boards should be installed together tightly at splices or miters
- The ends should be fastened to the building or structure using 2 screws. The screws should be at or within ½” of each board and ¾” from the side of the deck plank.
- The side to side gap between deck boards should be 1/8” to 1/4”
- Areas with obstructed airflow need a minimum 1-1/2” sleeper system supported by and connected to the substructure over which the deck is built.
- Deck frames and substructure need to be securely attached to ground footings or building structure.
- Proper ventilation and air flow should be considered to minimize expansion and contraction
