Ipe Decking

Ipe Decking is the best natural decking material available in Canada or anywhere else in the world. Ipe (pronounced ee-pay) is sometimes called Brazilian Walnut and no other natural wood material can compete with Ipe decking when it comes to hardness, stability in the outdoor environment, longevity (up to 100 years!) and the ease of maintenance. Most people do not notice this, but most of the wood that is used in outdoor project by the City of Toronto since 2010 is Ipe. Ipe decking is used to build our city benches, our parks, TTC stops and the New Waterfront Boardwalk. If there is a an exterior wood installation for commercial or institutional use – there is a very high chance that it will be Ipe.

Ipe was used about 40 years ago for the construction of the Atlantic boardwalk in New York and its performance over the years has led many architects to realize the superiority of Ipe Decking over any other natural wood decking product.

Deckstoronto is a direct importer of Ipe decking from Brazil and is one of the major suppliers of Ipe Decking in Canada. We only supply the highest grade of Ipe (completely clear) and we provide expert installation advice to all our clients – contractors and home owners alike.

Just like our many of our clients, we are concerned about the environmental impact of Ipe wood harvesting in Brazil. Due to its high popularity, thousands of containers loaded with Ipe Decking leave Brazilian ports every year. The largest markets for Ipe are North America, Europe and China. One cannot help but wonder what kind of impact this has on the Amazon forest and our environment. We have travelled to Brazil to witness the entire production process from harvesting to milling and have talked to many industry experts in Brazil to make sure that the Ipe decking that we supply does not have a negative impact on the Amazon forest. We only source Ipe from major suppliers in Brazil that are heavily involved in forest regeneration and are investing in their local communities. When you are buying Ipe decking from Deckstoronto – you are investing in improvements to the Amazon forest and the local communities in Brazil.

Ipe Decking is extremely dense and strong. It has a beautiful, rich brown color and it is completely free of knots. Ipe decking is naturally resistant to decay and termite attack. Ipe decking has Class A fire rating – the same fire rating as concrete and steel. When installed property, Ipe will not deform much even if its left to grey without any maintenance.

Deckstoronto carries in stock a full line of Ipe profiles. We have Ipe available in the 1” nominal profiles (1x6, 1x8, 1x10, 1x12), in 5/4x6 for decking boards (grooved and non-grooved), in 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, 2x10, 2x12, 4x4 and even in 6x6.
