Fiberon Technical and Installation Information

Deck framing joists should be no smaller than 2x8 in size.  Fiberon company recommends spacing your deck joists at 16” o.c. when installing decking perpendicular to the joists and 12” o.c. when installing your decking diagonally.  We recommend using tighter joist spacing, 12” and 8” respectively to reduce the flex in the deck boards when material gets hot.  For commercial installations Fiberon recommends installing their product on joists spaced no further than 12” o.c.  Add additional blocking as needed for heavier items such as hot tubs and planters.

Fiberon decking is one of a handful of materials in Ontario that are approved by Ontario Building Code and CCMC.  When applying for  a building permit – you can specify “Fiberon” as your decking and it should be approved by your municipiality.  There have been cases where non-approved low maintenance materials have been installed and later clients had issues obtaining a deck permit in Ontario.

When installing your deck boards, Fiberon recommends using a 3/16” spacing between deck boards.  If using a Phantom Clip specifically designed for Fiberon decking, you are guaranteed to have the 3/16” gap.

If you are installing your Fiberon decking in the winter in Toronto, leave a gap of about ¼” from all perimeter walls and solid objects such as railing posts.  If installing in the spring or fall – leave a gap of about 3/16” and if installing on a hot summer day in Toronto, the gap from solid objects should be no more than 1/16”.
