What is cumaru?
Cumaru is a premium hardwood from Brazil that is used for decking. It is also known as Southern Chestnut or Brazilian Teak. This breed is in second place in terms of hardness and is inferior in strength only to ipe decking. It has a light-dark brown color, sometimes with a reddish or purplish hue.
Cumaru decking will last for over 50 years and it is naturally resistant to rot, decay, or termite attack. What also makes сumaru a desirable choice for decking material is its stability and resistance to cracking, warping, and splintering.
Cumaru has been on the North American market for over a decade. This harwood has a proven track record as a great natural wood deck product that performs exceptionally well in our cold Toronto climate.
Pros and cons of Brazilian Teak decking
Cumaru decking advantages
- very durable wood can withstand regular loads from crowds of people or cars;
- natural appearance, which creates the impression of luxury and high cost;
- protected from insects, like any kind of exotic wood;
- resistance to decay, which allows the decking to be installed near swimming pools and in wet areas of Canada;
- resistance to scratches, deformations and mechanical damage;
- long service life, which exceeds 50 years. During this time, the boards don't crack or deform.
Brazilian teak is a good choice for commercial decking. Boards can be installed in crowded places and be sure that the material will withstand the load.
Cumaru decking disadvantages
- difficulties in self-installation due to high strength;
- relatively high price compared to other types of wood;
- the complexity of care: the decking needs to be sanded, sealed and oiled regularly;
- the need for annual oiling - without it, the wood will burn out and become gray.

Brazilian teak decking maintenance
Natural wood decking requires regular maintenance. Every two or three years it needs to be grinded and sealed. Proper maintenance of your decking will prolong its life and protect it from cracking.
Cumaru boards need to be painted with a special oil every year. The procedure will return the rich color to the deck.
Those who like the noble gray color of the boards can choose not to paint the decking. Over time, the color will fade and acquire a noble silvery hue.
Also, the decking requires standard care in the form of regular washing and sweeping.

Brazilian teak decking is in no way inferior to ipe decking in terms of quality: it is just as strong and reliable, and at the same time cheaper. Cumaru also outperforms composite decking in every way except for ease of maintenance and color variety.
